The UGC NET full form is the University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test, a national-level exam conducted online by the National Testing Agency (NTA). This competitive exam is a computer-based test for the students for the Junior Research Fellow and Assistant Professor post. 

University Grants Commission is the central educational department agency that regulates Indian colleges and recognizes higher education courses and administration. The National Testing Agency is the central academic department responsible for conducting multiple complete exams in India. 

UGC NET 2024

The National Eligibility Test (NET) is one of the computer exams conducted twice a year for students who have completed their post-graduation program. NET is conducted online across various cities in India in June and December.

Purpose of the CSIR UGC NET Exam

Students who have qualified for their post-graduation program in their respective fields can appear for the NET UGC exam to be eligible for the post of assistant professor in a higher education institution and get a research fellowship to have a doctorate. 

As per the merit list of the exam, the top 6% of students are eligible for both assistant professor and research fellowship programs in reputed institutions with lucrative stipends, and another 15% of students are eligible for associate professor posts.

The exam aims to select students for the Junior Research Fellowship program assisted by the central educational department. This fellowship program is more important than the standard Ph.D. degree from a random institute. 

UGC NET mock test checks the subject-specific knowledge of the candidate through Multiple Choice Questions. Subjective questions are not asked in this exam. Also, to qualify for this exam, students must focus on their core subjects and pay attention to any language they are comfortable with.

UGC NET Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for this exam are well-defined by the NTA. Students who are appearing for the exam should possess a postgraduate degree without any backlog or should be appearing for the last semester of the post-graduation program. 

To qualify for the exam, students have to maintain a minimum 55% aggregate in the post-graduation program, and some relaxation is given for SC/STs and other criteria, which is a maximum of 50%.

Apart from postgraduate degrees, the age limit for the exam is at most 30 years. In this criteria, some relaxation is given to backward classes, army officers, and disabled people, among many, which can go a maximum of 35 years. 

NTA has announced that it will only provide relaxation for up to 35 years in any circumstances. Besides these criteria, candidates should also choose the subjects specified in the CSIR UGC NET December 2022 notification, as the exam will be conducted only for notified subjects. To get or qualify for any relaxation in the examination, students should verify their relaxation limit from NTA before the last form-filling date. NTA gives the final decision on the relaxation through notification.

NTA UGC NET Exam Date 2024 Subject Wise

The NTA announces the CSIR UGC NET exam date 2022 subject wise through the notification, released on the official website in the last week of March and September. 

This detailed notification discusses the aspects of the exam and explains the eligibility criteria, relaxation norms, and other necessities for the examination.

Paper Pattern of the NTA UGC NET 2024

The paper pattern for the exam is simple. The UGC NET exam paper includes only Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). No subjective questions are asked in the question paper. Two papers are conducted on the examination day. A relaxation break is also provided after one paper.

  • The first paper is conducted for the language subject selected by the student. This paper is worth 100 marks, and 50 questions are asked in the paper. Three hours are given to the candidates to solve the paper. This time is called the First shift of the exam, which is conducted from 9 to noon. 
  • After the first shift, the second shift is conducted around 3 to 6 pm. This second paper consists of 100 questions, holding two marks each. The maximum mark for this paper is 200 marks, and 3 hours are given to solve the UGC NET form 2023, which consists of inquiries related to the subject chosen by the candidate apart from language.

The paper is written in English and Hindi only. Students can choose their medium during the UGC NET application online.

After passing the UGC NET 2024 exam, the leading career paths for the students are JRF and Assistant Professor posts.

  • Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) – JRF is the research problem conducted by the central educational department to give research-related opportunities to the top-scoring students. Students are also provided specific stipends during the research period. 

The research period can be a minimum of three years. For the two years, more than 30,000 rupees are credited to the candidate for each month. In the last year of the fellowship, more than 45000 rupees as a stipend is given to the candidate. This stipend amount can vary according to the UGC norms.

  • Assistant Professor – Assistant Professor is the teaching post in government and private universities of India. After qualifying for UGC NET, students can apply for this post in central and state colleges. 

After gaining a few years of experience as an assistant professor, the candidate is promoted to the professor of the specific department in the university.
